  • Not only does Florida have the most coastline of any state in the continental US, but it is also the only state that borders both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. It is also the southernmost state in the US.
  • Florida has 161 state parks and 10 state trails. Most charge a nominal fee which helps the Florida Department of Environmental Protection oversee the operations of these properties.
  • Ten of the Florida State parks are only accessible by private boat or ferry. Thirteen of the state parks include National Landmarks.
  • Florida also has 11 national parks.
  • Florida has the most golf courses of any state.
  • Britton Hill is the highest point in Florida at only 345 feet above sea level.
  • Dogs are not allowed on state beaches in Florida, and there are strict rules and restrictions on many other beaches. Check ahead if you plan to bring your furry friend with you on a sand and sun outing in Florida.
  • The city of St. Augustine is the oldest European-established settlement in the continental United States that has continuously been occupied.
  • NASA facilities for space launches are located at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral.
  • Gatorade was developed and first enjoyed by athletes at the University of Florida whose mascot is Gators.
  • There are only two naturally round lakes in the world and one of those, Round Lake, is located in DeFuniak Springs, FL.
  • Florida is plagued with an extraordinary number of sinkholes, some of which have claimed lives and property.
