I woke early this morning to get a head start on the beginning of 2nd semester at the high school where I teach. We had a three-week winter break due to the district’s nearly year-round schedule. Gloomy skies over rippling waves painted a dreary scene on my drive down Beach Blvd, but at least the temperatures were mild. The students were excited to be back and anxious to get started on their new class schedules. It was a smooth transition into the new year, and I was happy to be getting back to work.
By the time students were dismissed at 3:30, the weather had deteriorated, and temps were plummeting. Everyone was anxious to get home before the storm hit, including me. I couldn’t help but be fascinated, though, by the magnificent power of the waves rolling over what just a day earlier had been a beautiful playground of white sand. Part of me wanted to pull into one of the parking places that lined the shore and storm gaze. What is it about the coastline that draws me so intensely like a moth to a flame? I think a major part of it is that I am reminded of how God is in control of everything and how fierce and powerful He is. I know how tenuous life near the water can be, how quickly floods and winds can turn our lives inside out, but I still find so much joy in living on the edge of the world where the sun glides over the horizon in the morning and melts into the waves at night and where I am constantly reminded of the awesomeness of God. I’m reminded that he will carry me through the storms and provide me with all that I need for eternity.
Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father,
In the midst of life’s storms, I am reminded of Your mighty power and control over all things. Just as You spoke to the raging sea and brought calm, I trust in Your ability to bring peace to the storms of my life. Help me find beauty in the midst of chaos, knowing that Your hand is guiding me through every challenge.
I thank You, Lord, for being my refuge and strength. Even when the winds howl and the waves crash, I choose to trust in Your unfailing love. Thank You for the assurance that, no matter the circumstances, You are with me, and Your plans for me are good.
Grant me the strength to face the storms with faith and gratitude. May my heart be anchored in Your promises, and may I find peace in Your presence. In Jesus’ name, I pray.
