Prepping Pets for Hurricane Season

prepping pets for hurricane season

June through November is hurricane season here on the Gulf Coast. If you’ve lived here for any amount of time, you know how important it is to always be ready for the unexpected when it comes to storm season. Don’t forget to include plans for your pets when making your preparations. Prepping pets will give you peace of mind and save you from the anxiety of last minute decisions. Below are a list of things you should keep in mind.

  • Make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations. If you need to evacuate with your pets, you will need to have proof that they are vaccinated.
  • You need good pictures of your four legged friends in case they get separated from you. Have a close-up of their face and a full body shot.
  • Pack a bug-out bag for your pets in case you need to leave in a hurry. It should include an extra leash, zipper seal bags of good, any medication they need and a toy they like.
  • It would be helpful to have collapsible crates that are easy to store in your car in case of an evacuation. This will not take up much room, but give you a way to keep them contained in a hotel room, or shelter.
  • After the storm, keep an eye on your pets. They rely on their sense of smell, and most familiar scents will be washed away in the storm.
  • Also, don’t let them drink from puddles that could be contaminated with chemicals or poisonous plants from the storm.
  • Keep them safe from wildlife that will also be dazed and confused. Snakes in particular are prone to be closer to home than usual.
  • Most of all, interact with your pets in a calm manner. They will pick-up on your vibe and if you are panicked, they will be, too.

I have a large crate like this for my German Shepherd, Bella. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
