The United States Navy Blue Angels, established in 1946, is one of the most iconic and revered aerobatic flight demonstration teams in the world. The genesis of the Blue Angels can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II, a period when there was a desire to boost public morale and showcase naval aviation capabilities. Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, then Chief of Naval Operations, conceived the idea of creating a flight demonstration team to engage with the public and demonstrate the precision and skill of naval aviators.
The team was officially formed on April 24, 1946, in Jacksonville, Florida, under the command of Lieutenant Commander Roy “Butch” Voris. Initially flying the Grumman F6F Hellcat, the Blue Angels transitioned to the faster and more modern F8F Bearcat in 1947. Over the years, the team has flown various aircraft, including the F-4 Phantom II, A-4 Skyhawk, and currently, the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet.
The Blue Angels are renowned for their precision flying and choreographed aerobatic maneuvers performed at high speeds. The team’s signature diamond formation, as well as solo and high-performance maneuvers, captivates audiences at airshows across the United States and around the world.
