Decorate on a Dime: Top Tips for Thrift Store Home Decor

Decorating your home with thrifted items can be a creative and sustainable way to achieve a unique and personalized look. Since I’ve recently rented a small apartment to be nearer my new job, I’ve been hitting local thrift stores for inexpensive items to use in my new home away from home. If like me, you’re decorating your space, here are some tips to help you make the most of thrifted finds while decorating your home:

Define Your Style:

Before you start thrifting, have a clear idea of your preferred style or theme. Knowing your style will guide your choices and help you create a cohesive look. It will also help you stay focused and avoid the danger of bringing home a random assortment of clutter.

Have a Vision:

Living on the Gulf Coast my entire life, I’ve always been drawn to beach decor. The images above are from one of my Pinterest boards.

Visualize how thrifted items will fit into your existing decor. Consider creating a mood board or Pinterest inspiration board to help you stay focused while shopping. Concentrate on one room or space at a time.

Mix and Match:

Don’t be afraid to mix different styles and eras. A blend of vintage, modern, and eclectic pieces can add character and interest to your space. In my apartment, I’ve mixed modern metal and glass tables with a relaxed beach décor in order to highlight more of my shell and driftwood pieces. My place is also furnished with a couch and chair that have been in the family since the mid 70’s. I Painted the worn finish with chalk paint and the streaked finish is reminiscent of the look of driftwood.

Focus on Key Pieces:

Look for statement pieces that can become the focal points of a room. This could be a unique piece of furniture, a vintage mirror, or a colorful artwork. You can find beautiful examples of local art for very reasonable prices. I recently scored a lovely signed watercolor print of a Gulf Coast light house. I didn’t add a frame because I can’t add additional nail holes to the apartment walls beyond those that were already in place. I used a sticky-back hook on the wall and glued a plastic hanger on the back of the matted image. I also used sticky-back hooks to display some driftwood art on the adjacent wall.

Consider Functionality:

When thrifting furniture or decor, prioritize functionality. Look for items that serve a purpose and fit your lifestyle. Pieces with storage capabilities or multi-functional features are especially valuable. This is especially true for small spaces such as my one bedroom apartment.

Check for Quality:

While thrifted items are often budget-friendly, it’s essential to ensure they are of good quality. Check for sturdy construction, minimal damage, and durable materials. Well-made furnishings and accessories that have been donated by people just wanting a new look often need only a minimum amount of refurbishing to look wonderful in your home.

Upcycling and DIY:

Get creative with upcycling and do-it-yourself projects. A fresh coat of paint, new hardware, or simple alterations can transform thrifted items into personalized treasures.

I found this lamp already filled with shells, but the base was cemented in a terra-cotta tray that was cracked and broken. I couldn’t remove it without breaking the lamp, so I added shells and moss to make it look like the lamp was in a planter. I also replaced the ratty lampshade with another shade, thrifted, of course.

Patience is Key:

Thrifting requires patience. Visit thrift stores regularly, as inventory changes frequently. Be prepared to spend time searching for hidden gems. It doesn’t hurt to get on email lists to stay updated on bargain days, either.

Explore Various Thrift Stores:

Visit a variety of thrift stores, including thrift shops, vintage stores, and consignment shops. Each type of store may offer different selections and price points. Don’t overlook flea markets and antique malls, you may be surprised what you’ll find and be able to negotiate a real bargain.

Consider Textures and Materials:

Mix and match textures and materials to add depth to your decor. Incorporate items made of wood, metal, glass, and fabric for a well-balanced and visually interesting space.

Create Gallery Walls:

Gallery walls can include more than just framed artwork. Don’t be afraid to experiment with other types of wall art mixing and matching pieces.

Frame thrifted artwork, photos, or prints to create a gallery wall. This can be an affordable way to showcase a collection of unique pieces. Also consider swapping out your displays periodically to keep the gallery fresh.

Think Beyond Furniture:

Don’t limit your thrift shopping to furniture. Look for vintage dishes, glassware, and decorative items that can add character to your kitchen and dining areas.

Coordinate Colors:

While your decor can be eclectic, try to coordinate colors for a cohesive look. This can help tie together a diverse collection of thrifted items.

I found this lovely vase at a local flea market. Although it is not exactly coastal, the colors fit with my space, and it features one of my favorite flowering trees and beautiful songbirds.

Shop Seasonally:

Thrift stores often have seasonal items. Consider shopping during specific times of the year for holiday decor or seasonal accessories.

Be Open to Change:

Stay open-minded and be willing to adapt your original vision. Thrifting is an adventure, and you may discover unexpected treasures that enhance your decor in ways you hadn’t initially planned. Strive to make your home a reflection of your tastes and values rather than a copy or “dupe” of some “designers” interpretation of current trends. The key is to make your home a warm and inviting space that also functions to meet your needs for daily living. By incorporating these tips into your thrifting adventures, you can create a home that is not only budget-friendly but also reflects your unique style and personality. Happy thrifting!
